Compostable bags rolling out now

RESIDENTS of Greater Shepparton can expect to receive their next complimentary roll of purple compostable bags from now until the end of March.

Since the initial roll out of green lid bins and kitchen caddies six years ago, approximately 47,000 tonnes of garden and food waste have been diverted from landfill.

Council director infrastructure Gary Randhawa commended residents on their continuing efforts over the past year.

“This has significantly contributed to the success of composting in our municipality. It has not only saved ratepayers’ money, but it also has wonderful benefits for our environment and economy,” he said.

“The composted material is predominately used to improve the health of the soil and its productivity and avoids taking up valuable landfill space.”

Mr Randhawa said the purple compostable bags meet strict Australian standards and are specifically designed to break down in the composting process.

“Please only use these Council provided bags in your kitchen caddy and green lid bin. Keeping contamination low is important as it ensures we fully reap the benefits of the service,” he said.

If you do not receive your purple bags by the end of March, please contact the Council’s customer service team on 5832 9700.
